What can sometimes happens is that cells that are cancerous can break off of a tumor and metastasize through the lymph system to distant parts of the body where secondary tumors can be formed. The purpose of lymph node dissection is to remove the lymph nodes that have trapped cancer cells so the extent of the spread may be determined.
