Fibroids are benign (greater than 99% of the time) smooth muscle growths of the uterus. These can be found in about 40% of women. They can grow into the lining of the uterus, in the muscle of the uterus, and outside the uterus. They can be totally asymptomatic or cause problems with menstrual bleeding, pain, and interfere with urination and bowel movements.
